How and Why? Examining Process: Phnom Penh

A first day with a fantastic group of artist educators with Sa Sa Art Projects in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Our space was full of idea, artistry and inquiry as we examined through physical and material explorations our Artistic and Educational Processes. What is the difference between the art-making process and teaching process for each of us, and what is similar? What do we need to do to combine them, to make them more symbiotic, or even the same? A participant asked me in the second hour, “Are you telling me that these two processes should be exactly the same?”. My response: “I am not telling you anything, but i am inviting you to ask yourself this question. I personally feel there is much to be gained by bringing these processes closer together, maybe you do not- but I am asking you to know why, to understand all the spaces that exist between, and to be intentional about it.” If there is a responsibility in teaching and art making, I believe it is to be aware of how and why we do what we do. - I don’t say this to squash spontaneity and improvisation and freedom, but to create the space and solid foundation for these things to thrive for ourselves and our students.
